Hi to everyone,
To begin, I was needing some advice on spirits/ghosts, or possible spirit attachment to material objects. I hope I'm not crazy for revealing this as silly as it may sound, well, here it goes;
I bought an old wind up Edison phonograph few years ago that gives off a strong presence. Its never bad, sad or creepy, rather it goes from content to good, slightly protective, to curious, at any given time. When I purchased this machine from my local antique shop, I immediately picked up on a certain sense or feeling about this phonograph. And at the time I couldn't explain why I preceived this strong sense or feeling about it. All I knew is I just had to have it when I heard it playing. I was simply fascinated by the machine because it don't use electricity to operate.
When I bought this machine on layaway, then later got it home, I knew nothing of the previous owner and still don't, like if they are still living or deceased. And I don't know where this machine was originally bought from (when new in 1922-23), but I do like to get as much information as I can before I buy anything.
Here is the information I was able to obtain (from the shop, not the dealer); the Edison phonograph was brought all the way from a large city because it never sold or seldom even looked at in the antique shop there, so the antique dealer decided it would sell immediately in a small town. And it sure did when I came across it. The best way I can describe this presence from this old machine is that it likes to come and go. When its around it makes itself known by a "pinging" noise that emanates from the phonograph on ocassion, as if someone were to tap on piece of tin. (It's hard for me to explain without going into greater detail). My husband has heard this noise too even when I'm not in the room where the phonograph is kept. Other times I will hear it when I'm in this room, or somewhere in the house doing house work.
My husband and I have tried to find a logical reason for the source of the re-occuring noise and I figure that it comes from the phonograph. We have eliminated house settling noises, and other outside noises like traffic, wind gusts, etc. Many times my husband and I have moved this upright phonograph around in order to accomedate more older phonographs in the room and the machine still makes a pinging sound every now and again.
Before I had ever bought this phonograph (or any other make of 'talking machine' as they are also commonly refered to), my room was pretty much quiet and had no activity in it. Could there be a spirit attached to this machine, or to me in particular? Has anybody else had anything similar happen to them with things that they collect or buy/ or were given? I thought I would share my story and ask on the forum. Any info is greatly appreciated, thank you - Katie
P.S.- If anyone is wondering I have never felt any cold spots around my Edison phonograph. All I do know is that the presence likes to linger around, then leave, then come back especially if I am about to do any routine upkeep on these old machines. As far as EMF and EVP recordings go I don't have any of these items. |

Uh oh! I "sense" another haunted Ebay item in the making! Just kidding.... Seriously though, what makes you think there is spirit "presence" surrounding the phonograph? And, how are you able to pinpoint "its" demeanor so vividly? - ie;

I'm assuming you have always been "sensitive", eh?
In regards to the noises coming from the phonograph, I would think it's probably a pretty safe bet that there is something mechanical inside of it, causing the noises. I would try to find someone who knows a lot about phonographs from that time period. I bet you will learn that it's common with them.
Thanks for sharing.

Aedryan,
Thanks for your reply and no, I have no plans to sell this phonograph on Fleabay anytime.

I feel there is something to it, and for a fact I own several of these machines.

Yes.

It is not physically possible for this machine to make this pinging noise mechanically wise. I know these machines inside and out and have worked on them extensively. - Katie |
