When I was very young, (around six) I lived in a house that had once sat on a rice plantation, owned by a wealthy land owner & his family, and complete with slaves & nannies. At night, I would hear a small bell go off. Just a single ding! and then it would sound like ppl were furiously scrubbing the floors & washing the dishes. But oddly enough, nothing ever got done, and the dirty dishes were always still there the next morning. I got up the nerve to creep up to the kitchen door one night, and the noises just stopped. No one (visible) was there. I thought I was going crazy until one day when I was playing with some kids in my neighborhood. "You're living in THAT house??" they asked. "Yeah why?" I asked. Then they said "Our aunt use to live there. That place is HAUNTED! She moved out coz she always heard ghosts washing the dishes & stuff!" Wild huh?? I think it was the slaves I heard. Strange though, my parents never heard it. Not once.
A few years later, we moved to another really old house, where I use to hear something playing with my toys at night, and knocking coming from inside the closet. It was very deliberate knocking-like someone wanted OUT of the closet. (And one night something actually laughed right in my ear! I WIGGED!) My parents never heard any of those noises either. At least they said they didn't. But I recall we moved out of that house in the middle of the night, so maybe they lied.
Anyway, those are a couple of my experiences. Hope you enjoyed. My real name is Nicole btw, and it's really nice to be here. This is MUCH BETTER than Ghostchatter, that's fer sure!!

Great story, Critter! You should try to get ahold of the people that live there now and see if they've experienced the same things.
Thanks for sharing!

I suppose I could go back, but the house has been remodeled, and some people have been living there for a long time now. Strange though, people moved in and then right back out of that house for years until it was remodeled. Maybe whatever it was moved on after that.

We have a couple houses like that in a town called Crosby on the NE side of Houston. The subdivision is called Newport and the houses are located on the East side of Poppet's Way. This development was built in the early 80's on top of the old slave town called, "Black Hope". The potters cemetery for the town was located where the cul-de-sac sits today.
The trouble started almost immediately for the Williams family who wrote a book called, "The Black Hope Horror" and a movie was made called, "Grave Secrets", both are based on true stories. Some even say the movie "Poltergeist" was framed loosely on this story.
I won't go to far into the details (you can rent the movie or borrow the book). As a result of the hauntings, four houses were abandoned, 2 people died, several other violently ill and bodies were dug up where a pool was supposed to be. In the court documents the development company was accused of knowing about the cemetery and building on it anyway. This was apparently supported by the original land owner who testfied she told them about the cemetery.
Today the houses in question are rented for pretty much a month at a time. The area is heavily patrolled by the police because of thrill seekers and criminal "ghosthunters" who decided to ruin it for the rest of us. Very few of us were allowed to go in the area before it was shutdown to nonresidents.
The practice of building over cemeteries in not new to the Houston area. The third city cemetery, where about 12,000 bodies were buried was built over in the early 20th century. Most of the bodies were moved but quite a few remained. The result is now an extremely haunted former hospital named Jefferson Davis, which has now been converted to "artist-loft" apartments. Before they opened the structure for habitation it stayed abandoned for 30 years where even the bums would not sleep in there. Then after they developed it they actually brought in several "Holy" people and "cleansed" the grounds.
It's funny...several ghosthunters rushed to rent some of the apartments in the building and now live there. They were not disappointed either, they report activity daily.
Sorry for the long post but I got carried away! _________________ Frank Ratka
