I'm new to the investigative end of paranormal activity. I have always been facinated to a point with it. There are a couple things I'm looking into right now. One is Gravity Hill (McKinney Road) in North Park just north of Pittsburgh. The other I'm looking into is Blue Myst Road. There is a ton of stuff that is associated with this road. everything from the dead of KKK lynchings, to a witches house, to a manevolent branch of the occult, to a midget farm, to rabid dogs and madmen. All of this has been associted here. I think what I'm going to do is do a day time walk through and try to find some landmarks to work off of and go from there. Its about a 2.5 mile stretch of abandoned road , so I have to narrow that area down as much as I can.
Oh yeah, I live in Baden, PA and I work in Wexford, PA so that puts me nice and close to everything I was just talking about. I'll keep everyone posted on what I find in both areas. |

| Thanx man. I'll keep ya posted for sure. I did fail to mention that Google Earth is a great tool as well. You can zoom right into where you want to go and pick some stuff out before you ever get there. I guess that would be a quick tip too LOL. |

Nice to see you here skullcrusher, my callsign in the military was a varient of that name, skullcracker! Anyway, definately keep us posted on what you find. I live in Texas so investigating those sites myself is unrealistic but I still enjoy reading what others find. _________________ Frank Ratka

Where about in Pittsburgh? Even though I don't get into Pittsburgh to often, I still work close to it and kinda hang in the out skirts some. If you on the northern side of Pittburgh, I got some stuff you need to see, not haunted per se, but still of a superstitiuos, live forever type of mentality that seemed dominate the late 1800's.
Nice to meet ya Frank, I the story behind my nick is a long one. No military involved, but still, well strange but true type of thing. |

Hey Skull,
We are hoping to buy a house either in the South Hills, Robinson or Oakland area. We're planning on moving in February. Possibly sooner if we can sell our crummy trailer before then.

If you move over to Robinson, let me know, thats only about 20-30 minutes from me. There's a Barnes and Noble over that way that is excellent, not as good as the Borders I go to, but good none the less. But thats cool. Infact, the Gravity Hill thing I'm thinking of getting some day time pictures of that and getting some measurements taken. I hate to say it, I don't think this is a paranormal thing, I think this Gravity hill is nothing more than an optical illusion. I think as a illusionist/magician, you may be interested in what the parameters are if it is indeed a illusion. I guess with that, it is just one of those things that has to be explained. In one way I kinda feel that if it is one, I may be "debunking" the urban legend around that small area. In another I think it's facinating that the brain sets you up to the point to think that you are actually drifting backwards up hill. I'll have some answers on that Saturday and I'll probably post them on Monday once I get some time at work. |

Yeah, we have a gravity hill here too and i've read about a lot of other ones. They always end up being optical illusions, caused by the surroundings and the way shadows are casted, etc. It makes it look like the road is going uphill when it's actually going slightly downhill.
No need to feel bad about debunking the myth, bro. Unfortunately, that is 99.9% of what we do as paranormal investigators. It's very disheartening and unfulfilling, but necessary.

Well, I went to the Gravity Hill In North Park and here is what I found. It is indeed an optical illusion. It looks like you are facing down hill, infact you body tells you you are going down hill, in reality though, you are still facing up hill slightly. To figure this out I used a common level, a self leveling protractor, my GPS with a build in altimeter (which gave me a screwed up reading, more on that towards the end of the post), and Google Earth. Here's what I came up with after I tell you what the premise of this hill is.
The "legend" about this particular Gravity Hill is that a small group of people died here somewhere between 25-75 years ago, all depends on who you talk to in reguards to the date and victims involved. What you do is stop at the stop sign, put the vehichle in neutral, and the vehichle will drift "uphill" like some unseen force is pushing on it. I did the drifting thing in the day time just to confirm the illusion, and it does indeed look like you are drifting backwards uphill. So I parked my truck and went to the stop signs and started taking some readings. At the stop sign with the level, the road tilts slightly downhill, with the protractor the road is almost level, about 1/2 degree downhill. I then went 30 feet back from the stop sign and took some more readings. The level was well down hill, and the protractor gave me a 4 degree reading downhill. Both of these reading said that at the stop sign you are actually sitting uphill. My GPS was about usless in the altimeter department. it said the futher I got from ther stop sign the further uphill you went. Today I did a check on Google Earth on that intersection and you drop about 1 foot downhill for every 20 feet traveled in the direction you drift after puting the vehichle in neutral. Just from this, I think I pretty much busted that LOL.
An interesting side note though, I noticed at the bottom of the hill from that intersection that there is a small memorial to a kid that died there. I'm going to check a little further into it and see what that turns up. |
