| I'm not sure what is going on, but the other night, my son woke to some force holding his hands above his head and he couldn't move them, and putting pressure on his chest and pushing him into the bed. He said, "leave" and the pressure released. There hasn't been any other noticable activiity going on in this house since we moved here a few months ago. I bought my brother's house, who has owned it for like 10 years, so the house is very familiar to us. What do I do? |

At the time that this was happening could your son move at all, speak out or see his surroundings.
Again, this sounds like sleep paralysis except for the arms over the head thing, unless that is how he sleeps, a sensory hallucination, or an involuntary nerve response do to his hypnogogic state. Sleep paralysis is where your mind is awake but your body is asleep. It can seem like something is sitting on your chest or holding you down. You can be either totally or partially paralyzed except for your mind. You want to scream but you can't and the more you panic the worse it gets until your body realizes the situation and wakes up.
It is a mechanism that keeps us from acting out our dreams or harming ourselves while we dream. It is only supposed to happen once we reach a deep sleep state before and during REM sleep.
Of course this is assuming that it is ASP (Awakened Sleep Paralysis) or RASP (Reoccurant Awakened Sleep Paralysis.
How old is your son? Is he old enough to understand that he should not panic? There are certain hallucinations that can occur during this state, especially when he becomes terrified. He may have a feeling of a strong presence in the room with him. Other strange sensations like you reported of feeling like his hands are above his head when they are really by his side (sensory hallucinations).
Again, his its the most likely scenario based on only what you have told me. Did anyone witness this event ot was it relayed to you by him? _________________ Frank Ratka

Yup, sounds like Sleep Paralysis. Spend some time searching Google for "Sleep Paralysis" and "The Old Hag Syndrome" and you will find a lot of information.
