I've been having up to a dozen spambots registering here per day and I finally found a way to stop them! Keep your fingers crossed, folks!

Argh!  This fix is only stopping the bots that fill in their profile info during registration. It's not stopping the ones that don't unfortunately. The majority of bots do put stuff in the profile fields during registration automatically though, so at least it's stopping most of them. We went from about a dozen a day down to 1 or 2 at least....

Thats not too bad. Do you already require a certain number of fields to be filled before membership is granted? It's been a long time since I did it so I don't remember!

No, how this particular mod works is, when people are registering, there is a message in a big red box, which says the following:

IMPORTANT: leave the Profile Information blank!
Do not fill in any of the following Profile Information fields, else it will cause the registration process to fail. This is for security purposes; it prevents automatic sign-up robots (spambots) from registering, because they always fill in some of the fields.
Note: you can still provide Profile Information after your account has been created.

If they fill out any of the fields, the registration fails and I get a "Spambot Registration Attempt" notification in my email. There are other mods that allow you to add a special required field to the registration form, but it's a huge pain in the ass.
For the life of me I don't understand how these damn spambots are even able to read the numbers and letters on the visual confirmation image during the registration to begin with....

unless the confirmation image is a bogus "feel good", eye candy kind of thing. You know looks good, makes you feel comfortable but does absolutely nothing. Yeah, never know these days!

No, visual confirmations definitely work, because if you enter the wrong numbers/letters, it will generate a new visual confirmation and make you enter it again, etc.
